Overview

Design and Screen
This is one fitness watch that is not bulky at all, in fact, it’s very slim (11.5mm) and light. The only downfall is that it appears to feel very plastic. The screen is small at 128 x 128, and there is not real flair to the design. But the good thing is the screen is bright and visible especially in direct sunlight. When you are going on an evening run, you also have the benefit of a backlight.

All of the buttons are easy to use and are designed so that you don’t hit them accidentally. It comes with a micro-USB socket located on the back so you can charge while you run. It has Bluetooth capabilities so you can sync whenever you want. It is also water resistant without a cover up to 30m.

Another downfall to the Polar M400 design is that both the USB cover and the watchstrap seem to be made out of flimsy material. They look cheap and brittle, so they may not last very long. Clasps hold the strap in place so if there is ever an issue they can be replaced.

Features
The Polar M400 works best as an activity tracker and a fitness watch. You can wear it all day long if you wish and it will track your steps and sleep patterns.

Polar M400 Activity – Jogging

It will automatically send inactivity alerts to your phone and wrist to remind you that you have been inactive for far too long. If you fail to become active, it will give you a bad mark in your diary.

When you click on the menu, you will find all kinds of fitness activities. When you choose an activity, hit start as well as the GPS signal. Data will then be collected, and your heart rate data will be logged until you stop. The battery has an eight-hour life when using the GPS.

When selecting the activity of your choosing, you can do it from the “sports profiles” and that way your calorie counter will be as accurate as possible. Some of the profiles that are available include Yoga and Classic Roller Skating.

Polar M400 Heart Rate

Polar M400 Heart Rate

The Polar M400 allows you to track your heart rate zone as well as set up complicated interval workouts in your diary. It allows you to set up cool down and warm up periods and set targets for each workout.

Apps for the Polar M400
The smartphone app is not that great on this device. There is no social aspect to it or a competitive edge. It just shows you recent tracked activities and your daily fitness scores. You have access to a diary that tracks your activities, shows you mapping, heart rate zones, laps, and pace. It will also give accurate calories counts for your daily activities.

The Flow site will allow you to create custom training activities. You can set up triggers for distance and heart rate as well as a warm up and cool downs. This will be great if you are into interval training.

The Polar M400 also allows you to setup sports profiles. You can have multiple screens open to show you multiple things.

Setup
Setting up the Polar M400 is very simple. When it comes to creating your profile, the process is easy as it only requires basic info like gender, birth, weight, height and how fit you are. Once your profile is created the watch will then guess your resting and maximum heart rate, VO2max and heart rate zones. Syncing with your phone or laptop is also very simple to do.

Performance
Performance for the watch is excellent; the GPS signals are always clear even when you are under tree cover. It doesn’t take long for it to get up and running as well.

It tracks heart rate, steps well without issue. It’s a high-performance watch because it allows you to do interval training, it has sports profiles and it’s water resistant.

The cons of such as a watch is that there is a lack of route navigation, in-water heart rate monitoring, socials elements in the app department, accessory support, and it has a flimsy strap.

Battery Life
If you are just using it as a step tracker, it will last for 24 days, but if you use the GPS, you will have eight hours of battery life.

Has good features and the sync to mobile is goodHave had more basis polar HRMs in the past and the GPS on this model was an upgrade. Has good features and the sync to mobile is good. The sync to computer is less good. I had to have the USB port on the watch replaced as apparently it had become corroded.By John Martin
